The European Commission’s science and knowledge service, the Joint Research Centre (JRC), published a Science for Policy report on the next generation virtual worlds, which are intended now as worlds where physical and virtual environments will blend into highly immersive and intuitive experiences.
The publication gives an overview of the opportunities that these worlds may bring in different sectors (human-machine interaction, education, health, manufacturing, public sectors) and the challanges that will have to be addressed (societal, technical, economic, governance, connectivity) with their associated risks (privacy, safety, non-discrimination).
The report also includes a comprehensive overview of the historical context of virtual worlds and a first techno-economic analysis of the digital ecosystem identifying current key players in different subdomains related to virtual worlds.
